Can you take a roof rack through a car wash?
On this page
Check your rack’s instructions before entering an automatic car wash. Some manufacturers require removal of the rack or cargo box. A wash’s height limit, or the word “touchless,” does not override that instruction.
Start with the equipment on your roof
| Equipment | What to check before an automatic wash |
|---|---|
| Removable crossbars, towers and accessories | Find the exact rack instructions. Yakima’s Landing Pad 41 instructions require removal of the Yakima rack and accessories before automatic car washes. |
| A roof-mounted cargo box | Check both the box and rack instructions. Thule’s roof-box safety guide, linked from Motion 3, requires removal of both the roof box and roof rack before an automatic wash. |
| Factory-installed rails or crossbars | Check the vehicle manual and the wash operator’s rules. The accessory examples above do not establish permission for your vehicle’s factory equipment. |

Does a touchless car wash change the answer?
A touchless wash and a brush wash are different methods, but that distinction alone does not establish whether your rack can stay attached. The reviewed Yakima instruction refers to automatic car washes without providing a touchless exception.
Check the equipment instructions first, then the exact wash location. If either excludes your setup, choose another cleaning method. If the instructions are unclear, ask the manufacturer before entering. Our wash-type guide explains the methods; it does not approve individual accessories.
The wash operator has a separate rule
Quick Quack’s vehicle restrictions exclude roof storage pods and ladder racks. Its list does not establish a blanket rule for every bare crossbar. Other operators may publish exclusions, damage disclaimers or no clear rule. A damage disclaimer is not permission to use equipment that its maker requires you to remove.
Use the vehicle-limits checker with “Roof rack or pod” selected to compare our reviewed chain rules. Confirm restrictions with the branch before visiting; the checker does not certify a vehicle or rack as safe for a wash.
Before you choose a bay
- Identify the vehicle, rack and any mounted accessory. Check each relevant manual.
- Follow any removal requirement. An empty rack is still a rack.
- Check the operator’s equipment restrictions separately from its height limit.
- Measure the vehicle in the configuration that will enter the bay. See the height-clearance guide.
- If the automatic wash is unsuitable, follow the equipment maker’s cleaning instructions and look for an appropriate self-serve bay. A self-serve listing alone does not establish suitable pressure, chemicals or clearance.
